Substance-related and addictive disorders involve the use/abuse of both legal and illegal drugs and other psychoactive substances. Simply using a psychoactive substance does not necessarily mean that one has a disorder or addiction (even caffeine is a psychoactive substance); these disorders involve patterns of substance use which cause significant psychological distress and/or impaired functioning. Addictive disorders also include nonchemical addictions, such as addictions to gambling or internet use.
