BUILD IT Express

A short version of the Bellevue University Information Literacy Development Interactive Tutorial aka BUILD IT

PLANNING YOUR PROJECT

This module will take you through the things you need to do before you actually begin to write your paper.
Don't forget to check the other page in this module, Keywords and Searching, before going on to Module Three.

FIRST RULE FOR WRITING A SUCCESSFUL PAPER - ALLOW YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME. EVERYTHING WILL TAKE LONGER THAN YOU EXPECT!

Follow the  steps for successful writing below. For more information visit BUILD IT/ PREPARING TO WRITE

STEP ONE: KNOW THE CRITERIA

Make sure your paper fits the assignment and you can answer these questions:

  • Topic Choice: Is it up to you or is it assigned?
  • Scope:  Just an overview or in-depth coverage?
  • Goal: Presenting information or taking a position?
  • Length: Minimum or maximum length?
  • Sources: How many and what type?
  • Format: APA, MLA, or something else?
  • Due date: It will be here sooner than you think!

OTHER IMPORTANT STEPS

There is more to writing a paper than writing!  Be sure to schedule time for each of these important steps:

Focusing your topic making sure it is neither too broad nor too narrow.

Making a timeline to keep you on schedule.

Doing some preliminary research on your topic to make sure you can find information

Making a good outline to use as your guide and keep you on track

Researching your topic, gathering and organizing information

NOW WHAT?

So you know the criteria, have planned your time, and gone through all the other steps involved in preparing to write,
it is time to do some serious research.

Good search strategies can save you time and frustration. Go on to KEYWORDS AND SEARCHING to learn the basics.
