What is the purpose of a Medical Hardship/Compassionate Withdrawal request?

A Medical Hardship/Compassionate Withdrawal request, when granted, allows students to receive financial reimbursement and/or receive a grade change (when applicable) for courses interrupted by a severe illness or injury, or a serious personal situation.

Is there a limit to the number of classes that I can request withdrawal from within a request?

Yes, you may only request withdrawal from classes within one term.

What is the timeframe for submitting requests for a particular term?

Medical Hardship/Compassionate Withdrawal requests must be made within a year of the term for which the withdrawal is being requested.

What happens if I have already received a grade in the class/es?

Grade changes will only be given if a grade of an “F” has been earned. The “F” grade is replaced with “W” to show a Withdrawal.

May I request a Medical Hardship/Compassionate Withdrawal for less than my entire course load during a term?

In most cases, a request will only be considered for complete withdrawal. Applications for less than a complete withdrawal must be especially well documented to justify the selective nature of the partial request.

Where can I find more information about a Medical Hardship/Compassionate Withdrawal?

More information is available in the Student Handbook. Students may also consult with their academic advisor and/or Disability Services.

What exactly is the financial impact of an approved Medical Hardship/Compassionate Withdrawal?

For details regarding the financial impact of a withdrawal, please contact Student Financial Services, at 402-557-7326. If financial assistance is received, students are strongly encouraged to consult with Student Financial Services to identify and understand the financial assistance/monetary implications of processing this withdrawal transaction. Please note that TITLE IV fund recipients who withdraw from all their classes during their period of enrollment may be subject to federal government refund and repayment requirements. The TITLE IV funds subject to these regulations are Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loans, and Federal PLUS Loans.

When a student officially withdraws from all classes for the term, the Financial Aid Office will perform three steps in calculating how much of a student's federal financial aid must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education or a student loan lender. This process has nothing to do with the Institutional Refund Policy that may be in affect at the time of the student's withdrawal.
