As a student with a disability you have responsibilities to fulfill. Students must initiate a request for services every semester in which accommodations are sought. If eligibility for services and the request for academic accommodations are approved, Disability Services will distribute accommodations letters with instructors outlining the approved accommodations. Accommodations are a cooperative arrangement in which the student plays a vital part – an arrangement between the student, faculty and Disability Services. To request accommodations for co-curricular or special events on campus, please notify Disability Services.
Accommodations are provided to current and prospective Bellevue University students with a qualifying disability. Students are required to contact Disability Services to request accommodations. While the student is responsible to ensure that our office receives all supportive documentation, Disability Services will help facilitate this process. Disability Services will review appropriate documentation, make an eligibility determination, and notify the student.
Yes! While Disability Services staff will not release specific documentation about a disability, they will verify that a student has appropriate disability documentation on file and share with the faculty or staff member the necessary and appropriate accommodations to meet disability-related needs.
The time it takes to be approved for accommodations depends on various factors, such as how complete the medical documentation is and how quickly it is submitted to Disability Services. It is best to apply for services as soon as you have been accepted to the University.
Because the laws for K-12 and Post-Secondary education are different, we do not accept Individuated Education Plans as documentation. An IEP can be helpful to use because it does provide a brief history of the disability and what accommodations you have used in the past. Documentation should be provided by a specialist who has treated and/or diagnosed your disability.
No. Disability Services is mandated by federal law to provide services of a non-personal nature for academic accommodations. Services of a personal nature, such as a personal care attendant, orientation and mobility training, wheel chairs, and hearing aids are not provided by Disability Services. While these types of accommodations are welcome on campus, they are the sole responsibility of the student.
Disability Services will facilitate temporary/provisional accommodations with your instructor(s) after the submission of proper medical documentation.
Instructors are not required by law to provide accommodations unless the student is registered with Disability Services and approved for accommodations. In order to provide accommodations they need written notification from Disability Services.
No. Accommodations begin once faculties have received an accommodation notification from Disability Services. Students are encouraged to have a dialog with faculty regarding accommodations, giving faculty reasonable notice to provide accommodations.
Absolutely not. Faculty members are responsible for referring you to Disability Services if they feel there is a need for a referral. Any document submitted to Disability Services is deemed confidential and is housed in Disability Services.
Not necessarily. Accommodations are determined upon a review of your documentation. Your receipt of specific accommodations from another school does not guarantee a provision of identical accommodations at Bellevue University.
