Daoism and Chinese Folk Religions

This section contains resources on Daoism (also spelled Taoism) and Chinese folk religions. Daoism is a religion or philosophy native to China, founded by Laozi in the 6th century B.C.E.  Daoist practices often mix with the practices of Chinese folk religions, and sources in this section may discuss either or both. Chinese folk religions are not officially recognized by the Chinese government (the government recognizes five religions: Daoism, Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Buddhism), but they are still practiced throughout the region.

Because different religious traditions often mix in China, sources in this section may also discuss Confucianism and Buddhism. For more information on Buddhism, in China and in other countries, see the section for Buddhism.

The resources on the right are arranged by general collection books, eBooks, journal articles, videos, and websites.
