ESL and International Students: Emergency Resources

Emergency Resources

While Bellevue, Nebraska is a safe and secure place to live, there are still periodic emergency situations which require emergency services.  While many emergency services can be contacted by dialing 9-1-1, some less serious situations are dealt with in other ways.

To the right, you will see a variety of resources about the Bellevue area's emergency services: Weather, Medical, Fire, and Crime.

Emergency Resources

All weather or incident-related announcements will be posted on Bellevue.edu.

Bellevue University will maintain normally scheduled operations except under the following circumstances:

Severe weather conditions that threaten the safety of students and employees.

Power outages that make it impossible to continue normal business.

Other natural disasters or emergencies.

In each of these circumstances, management will determine if the situation is serious enough to warrant temporarily closing an individual campus and/or relocating scheduled activities.

Bellevue and Omaha Area Locations:

The decision to cancel or relocate classes in the Bellevue and Omaha area will always be made before 6:00 a.m. for daytime activities and by 3:30 p.m. for evening activities. Announcements will be posted on Bellevue.edu, sent out via campus email, and submitted to local area radio and television stations.

Lincoln Campus:

The manager of the Lincoln location will monitor local conditions and other area closings. Based on the situation, the manager may decide to relocate classes or close the location. Lincoln location staff will post an announcement on Bellevue.edu and will notify local radio and television stations.

Other Satellite Locations:

In inclement weather and emergency situations, satellite locations will follow the lead of the host institution. Notices will be posted on Bellevue.edu.

Tornados

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when the conditions are right for severe thunderstorms. Be alert for changing conditions. Severe Thunderstorm warning is issued by the National Weather Service when storms with strong winds, rain, and hail are expected in the area. A severe thunderstorm warning may last for up to one hour.

A Tornado Watch is issued when weather conditions exist that could produce a tornado. A tornado watch may last for several hours. When a tornado watch is issued all faculty and staff will be alerted through the ANS notification system.

A Tornado Warning is issued when a tornado has actually been sighted and is threatening the community. At this time, the Civil Defense Warning Sirens are sounded, and the emergency messages are broadcast by the media. A tornado warning usually lasts for thirty minutes or less. When a tornado warning is issued all faculty and staff will be alerted through ANS notification system.

Everyone will need to go to a Tornado Shelter during a Tornado Warning.

Campus and Dorm Fire Safety Tips

National Fire Protection Association

College students living away from home should take a few minutes to make sure they are living in a fire-safe environment. Educating students on what they can do to stay safe during the school year is important and often overlooked.

  • Look for fully sprinklered housing when choosing a dorm or off-campus housing.

  • Make sure your dormitory or apartment has smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside every sleeping area and on each level. For the best protection, all smoke alarms should be interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound.

  • Test all smoke alarms at least monthly.

  • Never remove batteries or disable the alarm.

  • Learn your building’s evacuation plan and practice all drills as if they were the real thing.

  • If you live off campus, have a fire escape plan with two ways out of every room.

  • When the smoke alarm or fire alarm sounds, get out of the building quickly and stay out.

  • During a power outage, use a flashlight.

  • Cook only where it is permitted.

  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking.

  • Cook only when you are alert, not sleepy or drowsy from medicine or alcohol.

  • Check with your local fire department for any restrictions before using a barbeque grill, fire pit, or chimenea.

  • Check your school’s rules before using electrical appliances in your room.

  • Use a surge protector for your computer and plug the protector directly into an outlet.
