Omaha Against Hunger is a volunteer-driven effort to package and distribute a highly nutritious dry food formula around the world through feeding programs, orphanages, schools, and clinics. Locally, the meals are distributed through food pantries and food banks, throughout our communities.

Discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or familial status is prohibited in Nebraska. Covered entities generally include residential property owners, property managers, realtors and multiple listing services. However, exemptions exist for dwellings owned or operated by religious organization and bona fide private clubs for non-commercial purposes, housing for older persons, and owner-occupied private homes in which no more than three sleeping rooms are rented.

HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination, and transform the way HUD does business.

The combined commission is called the Nebraska Commission on Housing and Homelessness (NCHH) and is composed of 15 members appointed by the Governor as well as at-large non-voting members representing interests of each prior commission, council, or committee.

The Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) includes child welfare, adult protective services, economic support programs and the youth rehabilitation and treatment centers.

The Self-Sufficiency Standard for Nebraska defines the income working families need to meet their basic necessities without private or public assistance. Basic minimum needs include: housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, miscellaneous
expenses (clothing, telephone, household items), and taxes (minus federal and state tax credits). The Standard is calculated for 152 different family types in each of Nebraska’s counties.

Heartland Housing Beginnings Provides permanent supportive housing for young adults (age 18-24) who have a disability and are experiencing homelessness. To be eligible, individuals must be former wards of the state, have a disabling condition, and be homeless.

The purpose of the program is to provide assistance to prevent homelessness or rapidly rehouse persons who are homeless. Temporary financial assistance (1-12 months) and case coordination services are provided to individuals and families who are homeless or are at imminent risk of homelessness and who need temporary assistance in order to obtain and/or retain housing.
Resources are targeted and prioritized to serve households that are most in need of temporary assitstance and most likely to achieve stable housing once the program ends.

Heartland Housing Solutions Provides permanent supportive housing for individuals and families (preference given to families) who have a disability and are experiencing homelessness. To be eligible individuals must be homeless and have a long-term disabling condition.

MACCH organizers realize action is necessary to end homelessness in the Greater Omaha area.

Seven initiatives, from Awareness to Prevention, outline a holistic approach in actively ending homelessness in the heartland.

Pottawattamie County Homeless Link (PCHL)
Provides outreach, referrals and services to homeless and
near-homeless individuals in the Council Bluffs area. Onetime
financial assistance, Short-Term Transitional Housing,
and material donations are also available.

Project Homeless Connect Omaha ("PHCO"), is a 501C(3) organization.
The first event launched on April 11, 2008 on the campus of Creighton University, hosted by Father John P. Schlegel, S.J. President of Creighton University.

100% of all donations to PHCO are used for the homeless.

Samaritan Housing Initiative Provides permanent supportive housing for single individuals with
disabilities who are experiencing long-term homelessness. To be eligible individuals must meet the definition of chronic homelessness, homeless continuously for a year or more OR had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years, including being single and having a
disabling condition.
